The team at Specialty Coffee Trader have over 10 years competition and retail Barista experience and would love to teach you all they know about the art and science of espresso and brewed coffee.

We at Specialty Coffee Trader have designed 3 different classes aimed at developing the various skill levels of North Queensland’s coffee enthusiasts.

Whether you’re a home barista wanting to know how to get more out of your machine and grinder or a café barista wanting to fine-tune and perfect your skills, Specialty Coffee Trader is here to help.

Barista Level 1 – Art & Science

4 Hour Course
$250 per person / max 4 people per class

Learn everything you need to know to make great tasting coffee. The course covers all the basics including how to control the variables to achieve consistency. Course topics:

  • Required equipment / setup
  • Grinder operation (auto and electronic models)
  • Grind setting
  • Dosing
  • Tamping
  • Milk texturing
  • Pouring techniques and execution
  • Basic latte art
  • Espresso menu
  • Equipment maintenance

Classes run 7 days a week starting at 1pm

Barista Level 2 – Advanced

4 Hour Course
$250 per person / max 4 people per class

Learn to make coffee like a competition Barista. In this class you will analyze every step involved in producing a great cup of coffee to learn how it affects taste. You will also look into other factors that affect the taste of espresso at the farm and roastry level. Course topics:

  • Single Origin vs Blends
  • Roast profiles
  • Grind
  • Dose
  • Brew temperatures
  • Managing coffee freshness.
  • Latte art

Classes run 7 days a week starting at 1pm

Brewing

3 Hour Course
$200 Per Person / max 4 people per class

Filter coffee is making a come-back and is already trending in the capital cities. Learn whats involved with brewing coffee correctly and how it differs from espresso. You will be using the most common types of brewing devices used and taste the subtle differences that make them unique. Course Topics:

  • Basic brewing equipment
  • Different styles of brewing
  • Brew ratios
  • Brew recipes
  • Chemex
  • Plunger
  • Cold Brew
  • Aeropress

Classes run 7 days a week starting at 1pm

Latte Art

2 Hour Course
$200 Per Person / max 4 people per class

In this class you will learn how to texture milk like a pro and understand the importance of executing milk into the espresso base correctly.

The course will cover the following free-pour patterns as well as some basic etching designs:

  • Love heart
  • Tulip
  • Rosetta

Classes run only on weekends starting at 9am
